Fascinated by Japan and collector of Japanese prints, the Dutch painter and photographer George Hendrik Breitner created a series of 14 paintings depicting great serenity entitled ‘Young girls in kimono’.

The artist began in 1893, having discovered a series of Japanese prints at an exhibition in The Hague. He had the idea to photograph the model Geesje Kwak, a 16-year-old girl, posing in a red, white and blue kimono. These photographs gave way to colorful paintings depicting a half-sleeping woman on a bed, dressed only in a kimono. Alongside this Japanese theme, George Hendrik Breitner overlays his iconic impressionist style.
