Nickamed ‘Kyoto’s kitchen’ and a popular spot with residents of Kyoto, Nishiki Market, built in the 14th century, houses around one hundred businesses (selling food, but also all kinds of accessories and clothing) and restaurants that contain hidden culinary treasures.
On this 400m-long covered shopping street, travellers are greeted by warm cries of irasshaimase from sellers hailing potential buyers and are instantly immersed in this labyrinth of stalls, colours, flavours and aromas of soy milk doughnuts and marinated vegetables known as tsukemono. Visitors to this culinary hub are sure to leave with a full stomach and several shopping bags.
